QUESTIONS ABOUT SLEEP STUDIES:
Question: What happens during a sleep study? How is the testing done?
Answer: We often hear questions like are you going to “poke” or “probe” me during the sleep study? And of course, we will not do that! We actually set each patient up with a set of leads. So what are leads? Leads look like wires or cords, but aren’t uncomfortable to wear or sleep in. Each lead reads and records different aspects of your body during sleep - it also helps us test for over 60+ sleep disorders. Most people do find the leads easy to wear and that they can fall asleep in various positions.
Question: How long does the sleep study take?
Answer: A full sleep study is 6 hours long. Set up usually takes about 15 minutes and then you can go to sleep.
Question: Are the sleep techs in the room with me?
Answer: No. The room is all yours. Your sleep tech will be in a neighboring room watching your results from our computer. If apnea episodes do occur frequently enough, we may set up our sleep study participants with a PAP device so we can see the difference in the quality of sleep in the final report.
Question: Can I get up to go to the bathroom?
Answer: This is probably the question we get asked most. Yes, you can. A sleep tech will help you disconnect so you can use the restroom.
Question: Can I move during the sleep study?
Answer: Yes, you can. There is no need to sleep in one rigid position. The leads do allow you natural sleeping movement. If one does disconnect, a sleep tech will come in and help you reconnect it.
Question: Are you able to study people who are not apnea patients, but may need testing for other less common types that pertain to REM deficiency?
Answer: We are a full-service sleep disorder center and treat all sleep disorders. Feel free to give us a call at (320) 441-2104, and we can discuss further.
